Gentleman Reg

"You Can't Get It Back"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Nov 13, 2008

Back in July, we reported that Toronto-based singer-songwriter Gentleman Reg had signed with Arts & Crafts for the release of his long-awaited follow-up to 2004's Darby & Joan; his final recording for the sorely missed Three Gut label. Well, the advances are now out there and it's something to cherish, folks.

Before you get too excited though, it's important to point out that Jet Black doesn't hit shops until February 24, so some waiting is required. However, if you're in desperate need of some Gentlemanly action, you can go out and grab the album's first single, which is available on seven-inch now via Arts & Crafts.

"You Can't Get It Back" steps away from Reg Vermue's usual tweeness and breaks out the riffage, as he turns up the amp to about seven to drop palm-mutes and guitar leads throughout this spirited number. Reg sounds pretty confident too, like the last four years were spent pumping jugs of milk or something. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's been cruising along in a Silverado pickup to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, but judging by this newfound rock-ability I'd say at some point or another there's been at least some BTO blasting through his iPod while racing along Queen Street West on a Schwinn.

And just to get you pumped, there's nothing else on the album that sounds like "You Can't Get It Back," and by saying that I mean no two songs actually sound alike.

You can get a sampling of Jet Black at these upcoming shows:

11/15 Toronto, ON - North York Central Library
11/28 Montreal, QC - Metropolis
12/4 Toronto, ON - Drake Underground
