Gary Lucas

Operators Are Standing By: The Essential Gary Lucas 1988-1996

BY Roman SokalPublished Apr 1, 2003

Gary Lucas is a legendary New York City guitarist who borders on the odd side of sounds, of course being most known for his involvement with the Captain Beefheart Magic Band. On this collection of nuggets from his career (including some previously unreleased numbers), one gets that Lucas has always had a foot in every genre of music, from psychedelic, prog, blues, quirky, ethnic, choral and punk folk rock, as highlighted with two songs ("Don't Let The Bastards Wear you Down" and It's Happening Again") sung by the Mekons' Jon Langford. But even more evidence that Lucas is a great in his own right is that this comp highlights his writing skills, which often shine over his skeletal yet subtly amazing and rolling guitar work.
