Prince

"FUNKNROLL"

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 19, 2014

After first premiering "FUNKNROLL" on the Arsenio Hall Show with his 3rd Eye Girl last spring, Prince has now unveiled a much different studio version from his upcoming Art Official Age.

While previously we were treated to the full-band funkiness in the live performance, the Purple One resorts to a decadent, hip-hop-leaning boom to help him through the groove in the studio setting.

Poised to get the party started, he fills the track a popcorn-poppin' assortment of electronic tones, '80s-era breaks and a glass door-smashing clack, while a self-harmonized choir implores us to get turned up and out of control. Keeping things eclectic are the occasional explosion of glam guitars and a double-time closing passages full of house-style synth screeches, not to mention those of Prince.

According to Prince, getting into the rhythm is good for the soul, so do yourself a favour and stream the song down below.

Both Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum arrive on September 30 via Warner Bros.
