Published Sep 23, 2010Last time we heard from Toronto's favourite experimental hardcore sextet, Fucked Up, the group were immersed in the writing process for their third album. Called David Comes to Life, the album is apparently a musical, and guitarist Ben Cook told us it's "the poppiest thing the band has ever done." The band's recent choice in a producer definitely corroborates that notion.
While Hidden World and The Chemistry of Common Life saw the band working with longtime producer Jon Drew, this time they've selected New York-based engineer/producer Shane Stoneback, who has previously worked with Sleigh Bells, Cults, Vampire Weekend and numerous others through his Treefort Recording Studio in Manhattan.
According to a blog post from Fucked Up, guitarist Mike Haliechuk and drummer Jonah Falco have been holed up at Stoneback's New York studio to lay down the drum tracks for 27 new songs. Only 17 of those songs are intended for the musical, while the remaining ten will be used for various EPs.
Fucked Up also posted Falco's drumming cheat sheet, viewable here, which suggests album influences will include the Replacements, Radiohead, Oasis and Led Zeppelin. That weird combination of artists is pretty much the exact sound we had imagined for the unpredictable band.
