Published Jun 09, 2014Frog Eyes already self-released Carey's Cold Spring last year, but with the album coming out on Paper Bag Records on June 17, you can get familiar with it all over again on Exclaim.ca.
As previously reported, the album was finished just before Mercer learned he had throat cancer, with the a press sheet explaining, "Mercer's cancer seems to be departed, leaving us the opportunity to appreciate the record without such a dire context. The joy here is tripled: he's not going to die, and, as a bonus, the record is awesome."
Frog Eyes sounds as quirky and impassioned as always, with elegantly atmospheric rock arrangements supporting Carey Mercer's vocal theatrics. The results range from the distorted tones of "The Country Child" and "Needle in the Sun" to softly pretty ballads like "Noni's Got a Taste for the Bright Red Air Jordans" and the closing "Claxxon's Lement."

The album can be pre-ordered through iTunes or at Paper Bag's store.
Paper Bag will also be issuing a new book from Mercer called Clouds of Evil, which is an essay collection be compiled for his son.
