Vancouver's Frazey Ford is gearing up to finally take her third album — 2020's U kin B the Sun — on tour, and she's marking the occasion with a celestial music video for the title track.
Co-directed by Brian Lye, Caroline Ballhorn and the artist herself, the clip co-stars Ford's son, Saul. It was shot using vintage film lenses and employs strictly analog effects to create a dazzling visualization of those moments of serendipity that feel orchestrated by the universe.
Of the video, Ford said in a statement:
"U kin B the Sun" explores the vast and eternal within us — the reoccurring ancient mythology of the individual as the universal; as light, as the sun. Shot on location on Gabriola Island, BC, — traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw nation — the moonscape sandstone caves, lush rainforests and ocean itself serve as hypnotic and reverent imagery; the transcendent experience of communion with the natural world. Paper animation weaves between the dimensions of reality, of self, of the natural realm and the cosmos.
An elaborate visual accompaniment is fitting for the singer-songwriter's repetition of the mantra "You can be the sun" over an understated yet stirring bassline, capturing the album title track's whimsical transportive powers.
