Franz Ferdinand

"All My Friends" (LCD Soundsystem Cover)

It seems like a bona fide classic sophomore album wasn't enough for James Murphy. For Sound of Silver's second single, "All My Friends" he's gone and covered Joy Division's "No Love Lost," and also roped in both John Cale and Franz Ferdinand to each have a crack at his tune.

Franz Ferdinand's cover of Silver's shining moment, oddly enough, has distinct traces of both Joy Division and Cale's former group, the Velvet Underground. The heavy duty strumming is no doubt something they learned from listening to Lou Reed chop away. The hypnotic synths, on the other hand, sound lifted right from "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and the dance-heavy beat is as if Stephen Morris was the session drummer for this recording. Alex Kapranos, meanwhile, maintains his sexy croon, but slips in a lethargic-turned-fervent delivery to show he has in fact listened to Murphy's version.

All in all, it's a fantastic cover that should have fans of both sides reeling in excitement. And for those disappointed with Franz Ferdinand's inferior second effort, hopefully this is an indicator that they're inspired to take another crack at owning the dance floor yet again.
