Published Jan 13, 2014On Facebook, California folk traditionalist Frank Fairfield describes his sound as "old time down home music." He's a good fit, therefor, for Jack White's often anachronistic label Third Man Records, which will release a new 7-inch from the songwriter on January 21.
The single is part of the label's Blue Series. The A-side is a version of the vintage murder ballad "Duncan & Brandy," which is over a century old and has been covered many times in the past. Fairfield performs the tune on guitar.
On the flip side is a number called "Devil's Dream Medley," which incorporates vocals from the classic folk tune "June Apple." The song finds Fairfield performing on fiddle while accompanied by Zac Sokolow, who also plays fiddle.
The songs were recorded by engineer Vance Powell and mixed by Joshua V. Smith, both of whom frequently work with Third Man artists.
A short extract of "Duncan & Brandy" can be streamed below. The single is available to pre-order over at Third Man's website.
