Published Jun 09, 2016Vancouver songwriter Ford Pier has cranked up the volume in bands like D.O.A., Jr. Gone Wild and his own Ford Pier Vengeance Trio, but he's now channelling chamber pop sounds with a string quartet for a new project called Strength of Materials. Following a digital release of the group's debut full-length, Inclusive Fitness, the album will now be given a physical release on July 1 through F.A.B. Distribution.
The 11-song album follows two previous 7-inches released through Kingfisher Bluez. Recorded in Vancouver with producer Howard Redekopp (New Pornographers, Tegan and Sara), the album finds Ford handling vocal duties above the sounds of cellist Peggy Lee (Wayne Horvitz, Mary Margaret O'Hara,) violinist and violist Elyse Jacobson and John Kastelic (the Living,) and violinist Meredith Bates (Pugs & Crows).
The avant-rock ensemble are described as "Pere Ubu meets Shostakovich," with other touchstones said to include Franz Schubert, the Fall, Beethoven and more. Pier, meanwhile, offers up "lyrical vignettes of hope and despair."
Ahead of the physical release, you can stream the entire LP down below or buy a digital copy through Bandcamp.
Strength of Materials perform this Saturday (June 11) at Vancouver's Emerald venue with Frog Eyes, who will be celebrating their 15th anniversary.
