Destroy All Music: Revisited

BY Nilan PereraPublished Aug 13, 2007

This release is a time capsule throwdown of a point in history in Chicago when the whole art brut head bashing of the no wave scene was rearing its ugly head. Drummer/composer Weasel Walter managed to summon a frenzied assault from a band that included current jazz "stars” Ken Vandermark and Jeb Bishop, as well as Cheer-Accident’s Dylan Posa. On this recording Walter manages to get Vandermark and Bishop to deliver some of their best playing by setting them up against a wall of unremitting noise and having them sink or swim. Posa’s hysterically thin guitar and Chad Organ’s tenor/baritone sax blast augment the mayhem with some of the most extreme examples on "Demonic Velocities/20,000,000 Volts” and "Coffee House In Flames.” Destroy All Music manifests Walter’s "fuck you” punk vision in all its anger and energy, combining it with startlingly uncompromising musicianship. It was the ’90s, it couldn’t last and it didn’t. Buy it and you’ll know why.
