Flying Lotus

"Robo Tussin" (Featuring Lil Wayne)

I have to say, for the last couple of years it's felt like Warp was losing its edge, as far as continuing to live up to its reputation as an innovative electronic label. Obviously, the decision to branch out and find some exciting indie bands resulted in some strong efforts by Maximo Park, !!!, Battles and Canada's own Born Ruffians. But the original IDM-lovin' fans that were trying to stay onboard must have felt some neglect.

Well, the apology came earlier this year with the exquisite full-length by Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison), a hip-hop producer best known (musically) for the far-out segues in the Adult Swim programs. Los Angeles is not just a return to the spaced-out, crazy glitch that has helped solidify Warp's cred but fills the void the last few Prefuse 73 releases have left us in (take a break, Scott).

Adding to his growing catalogue, which within the last year includes an album and two EPs (Reset and L.A. EP 1 X 3), Ellison has burgled "A Milli" from Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, the hottest record in America, for this one-off designed to tickle the blogosphere. Shifting Weezy's vocals to a helium pitch, Ellison uses a canvas of underwater explosions and gurgling synths to remove the macho stance ("You're like a bitch with no ass") and float you into a sizzurp coma.

Wouldn't be surprised if Weezy added this one as well to the Billboard Hot 100...
