Rick Kulwicki, the founding guitarist for '80s alt-rock luminaries the Fluid, has passed away at the age of 49 in his hometown of Denver, CO. According to The Stranger, Kulwicki died on Tuesday (February 15), though the cause of death is not yet known.

After forming in 1984, the Fluid had the late '80s honour of being the first non-Seattle band to sign with Sub Pop for the group's second album, 1988's Clear Black Paper. They followed it up with another EP and three more albums before calling it quits in 1993.

In July of 2008, the Fluid reunited for Sub Pop's 20th anniversary celebration in Seattle, WA. In June of that same year, they played a reunion show at Denver's Bluebird Theater.
