Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold Donates Sweater to Fan Who Turned It into a Meme

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 28, 2016

Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold is no stranger to delightful Internet oddities (after all, he did score a movie about LOLcats), and he's just endeared himself to one particular online fan thanks to a ratty old sweater.

Five years back, a fan started a Tumblr in honour of one of Pecknold's sweaters — operating under the title fuckyeahrobinpecknoldssweater, of course — tracking its appearances in performance footage and in photos. And while the band have been M.I.A. for quite some time, the woolly topic was recently breached in a Reddit AMA.

Reminded of the Tumblr project, Pecknold reached out via Instagram, trying to find the dedicated sweater fan so he could give away the object of the Tumblr's affection. He posted a photo of the garment, asking the Tumblr admin to "HMU," explaining that he was "excited to see the sweater in new #situations expanding its #horizons beyond being #cozy on my #folkback."

In a happy twist of fate, Tumblr curator (and now Instagram user spinning.rims) got her due, receiving the sweater in the mail and posing for a photo in it.

She wrote: lesson learned: make a meme out of a sweater when you're in high school and 5 years later you might just receive it in the mail. thank you so much @robinpecknold ! i'm really at a loss here.

The folk-pop fairytale came to a happy ending with Pecknold sharing that photo with his own followers. See it below.

It's been two years since Pecknold opened up about Fleet Foxes' absence, citing J. Tillman's departure to pursue a solo career as Father John Misty and his own academic ambitions as the reasons for the band's break. While we continue waiting for a follow-up to 2011's Helplessness Blues, relive that album's title track below.

Thanks to Stereogum for the tip.
