Published Apr 04, 2011When they're not collaborating with chillwave artists, releasing iPhone songs or inventing "gummy skulls" releases, Flaming Lips have slowly been working on a plan to bring Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots to Broadway. We first reported on the possibility back in 2007, with an update last year, but now it looks as though the project is actually happening.
Speaking with Billboard, Wayne Coyne revealed that the group are "in the early stages of production" for the musical, working with Tommy/Jersey Boys director Des McAnuff. Along with Yoshimi, the musical is said to include selections from The Soft Bulletin and At War with the Mystics.
"It'll be a big chunk of Flaming Lips music, probably about 30 songs," Coyne said. "It's a big deal. It's hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful. It's really become a perfect combination of my fantastical robot-world vision and little, internal, humanistic version of what that music is. I really believe it could work -- and luckily I don't have to do much!"
In addition to the musical, Coyne also revealed that the band are planning an array of other weird releases this year, including a series of flexi-disc singles to be given away with cereal boxes and in an upcoming issue of MAD Magazine.
