Published Sep 14, 2010The Flaming Lips and Guided By Voices have a great deal in common. Both bands formed in 1983, both carried the torch of indie rock through the '90s and into the '00s, and both have packs of rabid fans across the globe. Soon, their worlds will collide, as the Flaming Lips will take on GBV for an upcoming tribute album.
While details are scarce, Pitchfork points to a tweet from Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, who wrote, "Spent the morning recording some singing for Guided By Voices tribute record." He also included a video of him singing an excerpt of GBV's "Smothered in Hugs," which can be streamed below.
Other than that, all we know is that the tribute record will also feature contributions from Western Civ and the Breeders' Kelley Deal, who collaborates with Buffalo Killers. Pitchfork is reporting that the album is "80% done" and will be released in early 2011 via No More Fake Labels.
