The Flaming Lips

Split Single with Horse Thief

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Apr 17, 2013

The Flaming Lips are showing some hometown pride alongside rising indie act Horse Thief, with both of the Oklahoma City bands having just delivered covers of each other's work.

The Lips reinterpret Horse Thief's "I Am the Bear," off the young act's just released Grow Deep, Grow Wild, as a lo-fi slice of fuzzed-out psychedelia. The cover gets by on a pumping pulse, spacious organ stabs, new age synth swirls, and hushed, broken-mic vocal harmonies.

Horse Thief, meanwhile, treat The Terror track "Try to Explain" to an airy run-through that has vocalist Cameron Neal whiskey-weathered calls sounding a might more folk-flecked than Wayne Coyne's original take.
