The Flaming Lips

"I Am the Walrus" (live studio video) (Beatles cover)

The Flaming Lips have evidently struck up a bit of a friendship with Yoko Ono as of late; they recruited her for a recent Christmas song, and Yoko's Plastic Ono Band will be performing alongside the Lips at their New Year's Freak Out No. 5 (December 31 and January 1 in Oklahoma City, OK). It's only fitting, then, that Wayne Coyne and co. have recorded a cover of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus."

Given the Flaming Lips' penchant for freaky weirdness, it's not too much of a surprise that they make this psych rock masterpiece even more bizarre than the original. With its brittle distortion, this is a lot more abrasive than the version that appeared on 1967's Magical Mystery Tour. Recorded by Delo Creative at Oklahoma City's Pink Floor Studio, this performance looks almost as strange as it sounds. Check it out below.
