The Flaming Lips

Collaborations with Bon Iver, Erykah Badu, Ke$ha

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 25, 2012

We knew that the Flaming Lips were gearing up to release a compilation album of insanely high-profile collaborations on Record Store Day (April 21), and that contributors would include Bon Iver, Yoko Ono, Death Cab for Cutie, Lightning Bolt, Ghostland Observatory, Neon Indian and Nick Cave. Now, the band have shared some new clips from the collection.

These previews, posted by Lips frontman Wayne Coyne on Twitter, are brief extracts from the band's work with Bon Iver, Erykah Badu and Ke$ha. The Flaming Lips are clearly drawing a lot of inspiration from their collaborators, since the Bon Iver team-up contains an atmospheric wash of choral vocals, while the Badu one contains a punchy soul groove.

Pitchfork notes that the collaboration with Badu appears to include a cover of the folk classic "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" (made famous by Roberta Flack).

See more clips from that team up here and here, and check out a picture of Coyne and Badu above.

Coyne also fulfilled a dream by working with Ke$ha, and he has been tweeting about the experience like mad. Check out clips here and here and here.
