Published Sep 14, 2015Toronto-based five-piece Fitness Club Fiasco may sound like they were named after a tragic treadmill incident, but their music conjures slightly happier thoughts. The band are set to release their debut album Modern Thought later this week, but Exclaim! is giving you a chance to hear it right now.
The record came together over the past three years — a period that has seen the band members endure marriages, breakups, newborn babies and the death of family members. There were heart operations and brain surgeries, and even a successful mayoral campaign, and the result is a collection of songs that "reflects both the euphoria of those highs, and our attempts to navigate and make sense of the lows."
Despite the sometimes dark inspiration behind the music, Modern Thought offers up a solid selection of upbeat synth-pop tracks and shimmery serenades. From the sparkling introductory "Ghost Dance" to the infectious "Resurrection Body" to the appropriately retro-sounding "Oh Nostalgia," the group are able to deliver a lightness and fun that get balanced out by slightly gloomier cuts like "Goldmine" and the title track.
Listen along to Fitness Club Fiasco embark on a journey of learning to take the good with the bad by giving Modern Thought a spin in the player below. The album is officially out on September 18.
