Published May 14, 2010You could be forgiven for never having heard of Cologne Tape. After all, the collective, which features noteworthy members such as Axel Willner (aka The Field), Ada and Battles drummer John Stanier, among others, are only just preparing their first release.
As Resident Advisor reports, the group, which have apparently decided to remain unencumbered by digital necessities like an official website, a MySpace page and the like, will release the EP Render on June 14, courtesy of new label Magazine, which also lacks a home page. Besides the big three we mentioned above, Cologne Tape is rounded out by Jörg Burger (Modernist, Burger and Voigt), Jens-Uwe Beyer (aka Popnoname), John Harten, Daniel Ansorge, Philipp Janzen (of Von Spar), and other friends that happened to be passing through Cologne, the city in which the EP was recorded.
In a statement about how the project came together, Daniel Ansorge told Resident Advisor the following:
The whole thing happened almost by itself. There were these people with different musical backgrounds hanging together, realizing that they were listening to the same music, which resulted in making music together. We think it has something to do with the place (Cologne) and time (2010). Quite a few people have left Cologne for Berlin in the last decade, which resulted in the scenes getting smaller and smaller. So it happened that we of Cologne Tape who had always stayed, had moved here or were visiting for more than just a day realized we had the same love for the musical tradition of the city. Or should one say we got stuck together due to this same feeling? The Render EP will be limited to 300 vinyl copies and 1,000 downloads, and will be followed by a full-length sometime in 2011.
New label Magazine, for which Render will be the first release, aims to "position itself in between the art and music markets and enhance the value of the object and its collection in an environment that is getting more and more ephemeral." The label promises that all of its release will come in high quality sleeves, and in runs limited to mere hundreds of copies. After this EP, the label plans to issue releases by Barnt, PNN & Doc (aka Jaki Leibezeit) and the Field, who will appear under the name Loops of Your Heart.
