Feist Takes the Lead on Broken Social Scene's New Song "Hug of Thunder"

BY Josiah HughesPublished May 15, 2017

Canrock collective Broken Social Scene are set to release a new album called Hug of Thunder this summer, and they've enlisted their most famous member to sing its title track.

Feist takes over vocal duties on "Hug of Thunder," a slow-burning pop tune that spends much of its five-minute runtime showcasing ambient production tricks. By the time it reaches its crescendo, the song is more hug than thunder, though that's hardly a bad thing.

"I said 'I really want to be involved, but I need to contribute something that means something to me,'" Feist recently told Exclaim!, speaking about the new BSS record. "I went to the Bathouse [studio, owned by the Tragically Hip] and spent four days with people I've known forever, people with whom you're both visible and invisible — there's no self-consciousness. We wrote this song in three passes that's on the record. Then I paused and wrote the lyrics, so there is a story that will matter to me."

Listen to "Hug of Thunder" below. The album of the same name arrives on July 7 via Arts & Crafts/City Slang, and you can pre-order it on Coke bottle clear vinyl here
