Joshua Tillman (who basically is Father John Misty) seemed like quite a character. He had a peculiar style of banter that made making him intriguing and lent an air of danger to his persona, like a less aggressive version of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) or Nic Offer (!!!). With a full beard and windswept hair, he sashayed about the stage like a sleazy lounge version of Jim Morrison or Mick Jagger, in a white button up shirt with at least the top three buttons undone, making love to everyone's face. Tillman had a Fred Astaire grace to his movement, cut with an Elvis Presley level of hip wiggling. He kind of looked like the cover of a romance novel. Yet, for all his dashing provocativeness, his style of swooning indie-folk balladry and alt-country rocking seemed comparatively inoffensive. Tillman noted that it must be ultimately disappointing music to crowd surf to, likening that experience to a corporate trust building exercise. Regardless of its presentation, Tillman had a strong voice, and his band was tight and dynamic, their togetherness tested when the sound went out and they sang a few bars in silence, but landed perfectly when the sound returned. They've got the goods.
