Some bands wait around for a record label to give them the push to release albums and go on tour. Other bands know that the best music is often made DIY. One such group is Vancouver garage-punk trio Hard Feelings.
The band, which features members of You Say Party! We Say Die!, Ghost House, and many other Vancouver acts, recently self-released a full-length album, went on a Western Canadian tour and now documented the whole thing on camera.
The result is a 45-minute black and white documentary. Simply called Hard Feelings Summer Tour 2009, the film was shot and edited by YSP! guitarist and Hard Feelings roadie Derek Adams, and, as he puts it in the press release, is a "no-bullshit/no-budget look at life on the road in Canada" and a "sub-amateur film at its finest (if that's even a category)."
In an interview with Exclaim!, Hard Feelings front-man Al Boyle explains that the film is pretty straightforward in its goals.
"It's sort of for us, and we find it fun that we're just sort of doing it for our enjoyment, and to also show how Derek is amazing at it," Boyle says. "We really liked how it turned out. It really shows four guys touring across Western Canada, and what that entails: driving, playing, parting, and more driving. And camping. And food."
While there is talk of submitting the film for viewing at Sled Island and even SXSW, as of right now there is no official release planned. So if you want to take it in, you'll have to head down to the film's screening at Blim in Vancouver on October 3. All the details for the event can be viewed here.
