Now that we've sorted out the Exclaim! Best of 2012 in Dance and Electronic, it's time to take a closer look at what trends defined this year in the genre.
Though our Metal and Hardcore list evinced the multifarious sub-genres — Doom, Grindcore, Death Metal, Thrash — inherent to genres in today's music environment, it's electronic music, a genre increasingly difficult to define, that we felt deserved a deeper analysis of how its boundaries were being broken down in 2012.
We also looked into the alarming trend of Canadian DJs and producers fleeing our healthy electronic scene for the UK and Germany, praising those artists who play here and stay here — for now.
