Published Jun 20, 2012The long winter and spring are finally over, and today (June 20) is the first day of summer. For the next few months, we'll be basking in the sunshine and hitting the beach -- not to mention soaking in all of the great new music that will be coming out between now and September 21.
What will become the soundtrack of the summer of 2012? Here are some of the albums that we're most excited to load onto our iPods as we slather on the sunscreen and head outside. Only albums with a confirmed release date are included in this list, and of course, there are a lot more great releases headed our way than those listed below.
Exclaim!'s 10 Most Anticipated Albums of Summer 2012:
10. Purity Ring
Shrines (July 24)
Last Gang Records/4AD
Initially, many considered Purity Ring to be a side-project of Born Gold, but the Edmonton-based electronic pop duo have quickly become a force to be reckoned with in their own right. Now that they have a couple of big record labels on their side, look for Shrines to become one of the landmark Canadian albums of the summer.
9. David Byrne & St. Vincent
Love This Giant (September 11)
It's been more than two years since we began to hear rumblings of this high-profile collaboration, and now the wait is finally over. According to a press release, it "[eschews] a traditional guitar/bass/drums lineup in favour of idiosyncratic horn arrangements," which is exactly what we'd expect from these forward-thinking songwriters.
Yellow & Green (July 17)
Keeping with their old colour-coded theme, melodic Georgian stoner rockers Baroness will be filling our summer with the sure-to-be-crushing Yellow & Green. They already gave the album a bit of road-testing, but we're already itching to lay back and fully embrace this one, even with the promise of this being a more melodic effort from the band.
