Exclaim!'s Staff Picks: Ouri and Antoniya Are Twin Telepathics on 'i had this dream that you were my sister'

"Cunty" is the first word Montreal's Antoniya uses to describe i had this dream that you were my sister — her collaborative EP with fellow Montrealer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ouri — in press materials, and it really does set the scene. Lead single "1st bite" comes through on this promise from the taut bounce of its plucked cello intro onwards: "Live fast, die ugly / Live fast, die thirsty," Antoniya sings with a Caroline Polachek-level of sweeping operatics ahead of the thumping clang of the breakdown, where Ouri shrieks, "She likes / Com-pe-titionnnnn!"

The rest of the project takes a more soft-edged approach to serving cunt, with the high-tempo heartbeat of "róża" submerged under watery synths and breathy, vulnerable admissions from Ouri. The panoramic, piano-driven final track "ride home" spotlights Antonyia's versatility, as she effortlessly melts into her newfound sister's submersive soundscapes to deliver a moving vocal; a line with the heft of "It feels like big moments / Are stolen from me every day," is merely folded into the kaleidoscope before the breakbeat swallows it whole.
