Ex-Simian Member Becomes Lord Skywave

Former Simian member and current half of Black Ghosts, Simon Lord, has unveiled yet another project: Lord Skywave. With this one, however, the leftfield electro popster will be going it alone, crafting all sounds, vocals and production solo style.

According to Lord, his new project takes its name from the Lord Skywave synthesizer — an instrument his father built back in the ’70s — and uses the rare instrument (only ten were made) to erect all the electronic and bass sounds on the project’s self-titled debut album. Continuing with the family theme, Lord drew a lot inspiration from his grandmother Madeleine Dring on this outing, using many of her reel-to-reel tapes and 78s as source material for several of the album’s tracks.

Lord’s label This Is Music Ltd., which will release the album June 9, describes Lord Skywave as a mutant mix of Jamie Lidell, Tim Hardin, Prince, Raymond Scott, Brian Wilson and Serge Gainsbourg. However, if you want to hear what it’s like for yourself, several tracks are posted on Lord Skywave’s recently created MySpace page.

Here is the Lord Skywave tracklisting:

1. My Name is Lord Skywave
2. Slow Movement (from trio for oboe, piano and flute)
3. Idyll (Just Like)
4. Back into the Garden
5. Everybody
6. I am a Dead Man
7. Dialogues (from trio for oboe, bassoon and piano)
8. Half Forgotten (Keep The Best Bits)
9. Something
10. Maybe I Need To
