Et Ret Gasworks

Gasworks comes off like a more sophisticated version of Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack, as Et Ret creates a soundscape that is both lush and minimal. On pieces like "The Need for Work,” the guitars are melodic yet moody, emerging sternly from underneath a dense collage of violins, cellos, and subtle electronics. "Run on Head” is a folk tease with an enigmatic pulse and thoughtfully placed cymbals and percussion. Something like "Apokalyptien” could find a home behind Jeff Tweedy’s voice on recent Wilco records, while "Letting Go of the Balloon” is just a storm of ambient noise and Et Ret’s self-constructed string section. Gasworks is a moaning, demanding work of dark joy, a soundtrack that conjures varied images with each encounter. (Western Vinyl)
