Erykah Badu Prepping New LP with the Cannabinoids

Last summer, we learned that soul star Erykah Badu was working on material for an unspecified album with Flying Lotus, but apparently there are even more collaborative tracks from the singer on the way. A recent interview with the performer explains that on top of prepping a proper follow-up to her 2010 set New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh, Badu is also readying a new LP with her group the Cannabinoids.

Speaking with S2S [via FACT], Badu explained that she and the group, which also includes producers/keyboardist Jah Born and her musical director R.C. Williams, are readying an improv-based platter partially inspired by their moniker, which references the receptors in marijuana that trigger chemical changes in the brain.

"We are about impromptu performing and we are in the studio trying to recreate something we did on the spot and that's fun," she said of the group's ethos. "Our theme is welcome to the human brain and science of addiction. We want you to become addicted to that."

The group have been recording "somewhere in Dallas," and you can get a funky sample of what's to come in the studio clip below. It's unclear when Badu will drop either record, but it sounds like she hopes it's sometime soon.

"I give myself room to breathe and grow and to procrastinate but to finish those projects is my next successful moment that I am seeking," Badu explained. "I am working really hard this year. I don't have much time to write but I can do it."
