Neo-soul superstar and airport expert Erykah Badu is gearing up to drop the follow-up to this summer's FEEL BETTER WORLD! with a new mixtape titled But You Caint Use My Phone. We've already heard her remix of Drake's "Hotline Bling" and "Phone Down," but now full details for the upcoming release have been revealed.
The 11-track offering will be available as an iTunes and Apple Music exclusive as of November 27, getting a wider digital release on December 4.
Badu describes the sound on the new record as "TRap & B," and notes that each song references phones and the human need to stay inter-connected. It was recorded in Dallas with producer Zach Witnessin, and a press release notes that they experimented with EQs and filters, using a tuning fork and Tibetan singing bowls to achieve a feeling they call "sympathetic vibration."
The aforementioned rendition of Drake's "Hotline Bling" appears on the new mixtape under the title "Cell U Lar Device," while other telephonic title references include "Mr. Telephone Man," "Whats Yo Phone Number" and "I'll Call U Back."
And although Badu is teasing the appearance of surprises and special guests, there's no word yet on whether closing tune "Hello" has anything to do with that other song of the same name. Usher fans will also have to wait to see what "U Don't Have to Call" holds.
