Erin Costelo Premieres New Album 'Sweet Marie'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 12, 2018

Nova Scotian singer-songwriter Erin Costelo will release her latest album Sweet Marie next week, but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the LP in its entirety.

The album is the result of Costelo capturing 10 songs to record over the course of just 10 days — challenging herself to break out of the habit of taking a long time to make each of her previous albums.

"I am a HUGE Randy Newman fan and found myself listening to his song 'Marie' quite obsessively," Costelo tells Exclaim! "To me, it is one of the most romantic songs ever written. In a moment of dissent, I allowed myself to imagine who Marie was — did she like the song?"

"When listening to the song from her perspective it started to feel a little creepy! And then EVERY love song felt like a stalker song!" she adds. "I wrote the lead track, 'Introducing Sweet Marie', from her perspective. It is tongue in cheek, of course, but there is an element of truth to it as well. I felt a new sense of confidence to write WHATEVER I wanted to with this album. Without censoring myself. Sweet Marie is the most confident part of me!"

That process of creating the album was caught on film by fellow Maritime musician Amelia Curran, in a documentary called Sweet Marie: In Studio with Erin Costelo, which will air next year.

In the meantime, Sweet Marie is out October 19 via Venue Records. Get an early listen to it below, then head over here to pre-order it.
