Cholera Enslaved Humanity

Ottawa, ON progressive death metal duo Cholera recorded their debut EP, Enslaved Humanity, in late 2007/early 2008 when both members were only 16 years old. Now getting its official independent release, the EP is impressive, to say the least. Even with only two songs, clocking in at just over 20 minutes, there's still a lot going on other than typical machinegun fire death metal. The use of keyboard effects adds symphonic touches at just the right moments, emitting a dark, almost ambient sci-fi atmosphere. The vocals are questionable, however. The clean vocals don't sit well with the instrumental rhythms and sound out of place, and the more growl-y vocals aren't as deep and aggressive as the music requires them to be. However, since these dudes did record Enslaved Humanity probably before they even hit puberty, we'll just let that slide. (Independent)
