Love Me Tender: The Love Songs

BY Keith CarmanPublished Sep 15, 2009

It's no secret that the King of Rock'n'Roll was most popular when belting out crooning love songs. Therefore, it stands to reason that an in-depth analysis of those tunes would eventually surface. While it's an amusing peek at this aspect of Presley's career, Love Me Tender isn't that penetrating an account. Narrated by Ashley Judd, this feature-length retrospective mostly utilizes Presley's film work and television appearances to discuss the appeal of 22 tracks, such as "Loving You," "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and the titular "Love Me Tender." Kicking off in 1954 and running through to his Vegas years, it's full of background info and trivia but one must keep in mind that it was crafted as an attention-grabber by the folks at PBS during one of their endless pledge runs. In other words, it's a cursory view providing amusing distractions, as opposed to an unearthing of dazzling new Presley epiphanies. Tack on 30 minutes of previously cut interview footage as its sole bonus feature and watch accordingly.
