Elvis Bossa Nova!

Hi, I'm Elvis Bossa Nova!

What began as a fun side gig for five Toronto, ON players two years ago has blossomed into a legitimate project with the release of this highly enjoyable and accomplished debut disc. The group concept is to refashion songs made famous by the King as instrumentals. Their band name is a bit misleading, in that bossa is just one of many musical styles they draw upon, with rock and jazz being prominent. Most of the arrangements have been written by guitarist James Robertson, and the rock edge to some of his playing keeps things lively, as does his spirited interplay with vibraphonist Michael Davidson. Elvis Bossa Nova! feature members from such notable outfits as Run With The Kittens, Grindig and Creaking Tree String Quartet, and their well-honed instrumental chops are captured nicely here. The album was recorded in just one six-hour session, resulting in a warm and spontaneous sound. Highlights include an adventurous take on "Viva Las Vegas" and a sweet, bossa-inflected version of "Blue Moon." At 36 minutes, the disc is a bit short, but word is they're already working on a sequel.
