This year marks the 25th anniversary of Elliott Smith's self-titled sophomore album, and the beloved 1995 release has been remastered for an expanded reissue that will be packed with plenty of goodies.
Larry Crane, the official archivist of the Smith family, found the first generation mixes of Elliott Smith, and those were used as the source for the new remaster of the album. It's being packaged with a 52-page coffee table book that includes handwritten lyrics and previously unreleased photos from this era of Smith's career.
As if that weren't enough, the reissue includes Live at Umbra Penumbra, a full live album sourced from what is reportedly Smith's first-ever solo show. The show took place on September 17, 1994, in Olympia, WA.
"I've always felt like this record is underappreciated," Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon said in a statement. "A lot of people overlook Elliott's first two records — they think of them as a prelude to the bigger albums that followed — but when you go back, you discover they're really great. This is Elliott's most fragile and delicate music, and we wanted to honour that with a special and beautiful package."
Kill Rock Stars will release the full Elliott Smith package on August 28. Until then, you can listen to the live version of "Big Decision" below.
