Elliot Maginot

"Monsters at War" on Exclaim! TV

BY Nadia RompasPublished Jul 21, 2015

After spending his teen years playing in skate-punk garage bands, Montreal musician Elliot Maginot's debut LP might come as a surprise. Inspired by the likes of Nick Drake and Bob Dylan, and with Besnard Lakes' Jace Lasek on board, Young/Old/Everything in Between offers a spectrum that ranges from atmospheric dream pop numbers to simple acoustic folk music, while also introducing a unique spin on using layered vocals.

Before the singer-songwriter took the stage at Québec City's Festival d'été, we caught up with him to film a special session for Exclaim! TV, in which he performed a stripped-back version of "Monsters at War" accompanied only by an acoustic guitar.

As soon as Maginot starts singing, it becomes obvious that the absence of any elaborate effects emphasizes his soulful voice and leaves us feeling mesmerized by his simple, effective songwriting. Watch it below.
