Egon

Phonetic Disasters

BY Cam LindsayPublished Nov 1, 2002

On their third full-length album, Austin, TX's Egon have reinvented their sound into something a little quieter and gentler. They've now adopted the sensitive emo sweetheart tag, with pianos filling in for the customary guitars, and at times resemble the likes of the Appleseed Cast, a comparison always worth smiling about. Though they are a three-piece (guitar, drums and keys), their sound is a lot bigger than one would imagine. Front-man Victor Talamantes manages to cover a lot of ground with his guitar, and his voice is raspy and tuneful, with plenty of strength to keep a solid melody. Phonetic Disasters packs a real punch when you least expect it, and it is full of many surprises, making it quite the little gem.
