It was hard to tell who had gathered a bigger crowd at the East Village Block Party, Mark Mills or the cresting Bow River. It wasn't difficult to sense the impending doom headed for the party as the rushing water barely passed under the nearby bridges, but the show did go on, for a bit.
With a break in the heavy rain, a crowd of all ages had come down to Calgary's East Village Riverwalk Plaza for Mark Mills' mix of electronic beats and almost R n' B vocals, all done by himself.
When local favourites Smalltown DJs took the Red Bull Tour Bus stage, though, something was missing. The duo typically spins side-by-side with high energy, easily bringing fans to their feet, but this time, Pete Emes took on the role of hype man while Mike Grimes seemed to be begging the sun to come out with a mix of reggae, which the crowd seemed to recognize was a halfhearted effort.
Within the next forty minutes, the struggling East Village Block Party was shut down completely as city officials enforced evacuation orders, which began a wave of venue shuffles and show cancellations throughout the night.
