As his recent Golden Globe nod attests, Trent Reznor is more than just the guy that brought us Nine Inch Nails. His score for The Social Network is rightfully respected. That being said, it's hard to put his now-defunct band's 20-year career arc out of our minds just yet.
While earlier this year it was announced that his NIN debut Pretty Hate Machine was getting a deluxe reissue, there is some even more exciting news regarding the industrial legends. TwentyFourBit points to an eBay auction hosted by former Nine Inch Nails and Ministry drummer Martin Atkins that's offering up an extremely rare demo tape featuring early attempts at some Pretty Hate Machine classics.
The cassette, currently fetching over $1,000 on the online auction site with four days to go, was given to Atkins by Reznor sometime in the late '80s. The two had already been friends for years, however. The write-up on the item includes a bit of the pair's history. While Reznor became known for his guitar and synthesizer approach, it turns out he used to be quite the trumpet player.
"I met Trent when my first band Brian Brain played at The Phantasy Club in lakewood Ohio (just outside of Cleveland) in (maybe) 1983 or so, maybe earlier," Atkins writes. "We had released a 12" with a horn section on it and tried to find horn players across to USA to jump up onstage with us after learning the songs from some cassettes that we sent out. Trent was recruited by my friend Tom Lash to play trumpet. It was at a barbeque at the DeFraziers home (the owners of the Phantasy) where I spent a little time with Trent and remember him telling me about some music he was working on."
While the early attempts of these songs are thrilling enough -- you can actually hear samples of "Terrible Lie" and "Sin" on Atkins's Facebook page or below -- added features included Reznor's handwritten scrawl on the cassette itself.
Though the analog offering is going to hook up Atkins with some serious green, the musician explains that while he will take some of the money himself, he will be donating some of the proceeds to charity. The auction ends this Tuesday (December 21).
