Durutti Column's Vini Reilly Bounces Back from Stroke with New Material

In recent years, former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins has made a miraculous return to music after suffering a debilitating stroke in 2005. Now, another '80s indie hero is making a similar return, as Durutti Column's Vini Reilly is working on new songs following a stroke last year.

Back in September, Reilly revealed that he had been hospitalized. A post on his band's official website described it as a "minor stroke," saying that he was "slightly unsteady on his feet and [had] lost some feeling in his left hand."

However, Reilly hasn't let the stroke set him back in his plans to work on new material. He told Mojo [via Contactmusic], "I can't play fast. Having the strokes [sic] has made me introspective. I'm looking for a bit of calm now, and resolution."

Of course, the Duruitti Column's arty, ambient post-punk is already pretty mellow, so how much slower can it get?

In addition to writing new music, Reilly is halfway done a photo book that will document his lengthy career. This project was conceived after Reilly nixed plans to write a memoir, explaining, "There are people to protect."
