Published Jan 28, 2016Dum Dum Girls leader Dee Dee (a.k.a. Kristin Welchez) has announced she's stepping away from her longtime pseudonym and sound to enter a solo career as Kristin Kontrol. A debut album is expected to be released later this year via Sub Pop.
A press release explains that Kristin Kontrol is a more electronic-minded project than Dum Dum Girls, with the sonic palette said to touch on elements of new wave, synth pop, R&B and Krautrock. Welchez explained in a statement that she wanted to "open things up and shed light on significant influences that felt off-limits in Dum Dum land."
"The music is so different from anything I've ever done," she said of starting Kristin Kontrol. "I felt compelled to shed the alter-ego instead of trying to morph Dum Dum Girls into something else. I didn't want to mess with that legacy."
An introductory video featuring a few words from Kristin Kontrol, a tease of some glittery '80s-pop sounds, and footage of a recent photo shoot can be found down below.
Dum Dum Girls' most recent release was the Too True LP in 2014, which had also been issued through Sub Pop.
