Drummer Ali Koehler Leaves Vivian Girls for Best Coast

Back in 2008, drummer Frankie Rose quit Vivian Girls to join fellow fuzz pop outfit Crystal Stilts. Now, Vivian Girls have been left in the lurch once again, as replacement drummer Ali Koehler has jumped shipped to Best Coast.

In a message posted yesterday (June 13) on her Twitter account, Koehler (she's in the middle in the photo above) revealed, "I've left Vivian Girls to play drums in Best Coast but my replacement is a lovely girl named Fiona."

To anyone who has been following the groups closely, this isn't too much of a shock, since Koehler has been playing with Best Coast as a guest drummer for a few months (see the video embedded below, which comes from a show back in April). Now that the news is official, Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Cosentino tweeted, "Stoked to announce @hernameisali is now part of the BC family."

To make the whole thing more confusing, Koehler's replacement is Fiona Campbell from Coasting - another reverb-friendly pop band. That's right: Koeler left Vivian Girls for Best Coast and Campbell left Coasting for Vivian Girls. Try to wrap your head around that.

This is latest development in what's starting to look like a genre-wide game of music chairs. Last month, Frankie Rose quit Dum Dum Girls to focus on her own project, the Outs.
