Drake Reflects on Humble Beginnings, Opening for Ice Cube and Getting Paid $100 for a Show

"For anybody getting 100 a show right now... Keep going"

Started from the bottom, now we're here. Drake is feeling a bit nostalgic today after being tagged in a post from The Flyer Vault, a.k.a. Toronto's club and concert historian/author Daniel Tate.

The post shows a 2006 invoice, apparently from R.E.M.G. Concerts Canada, concerning a performance by Ice Cube at the city's now-defunct Kool Haus, which lists October's Very Own Aubrey Graham as a supporting act who got paid a measly $100 CAD.

The Flyer Vault explained in the post:

On August 19, 2006, Ice Cube headlined the Kool Haus with supporting act Drake in what was likely his first-ever concert. The Boy got paid a handsome sum of $100 and performed cuts from his debut mixtape 'Room For Improvement' which was released earlier that year. Classic history!

Drake took notice of the post and went on to use it for inspirational Instagram fodder, encouraging fans with the caption: "This is for anybody getting 100 a show right now... Keep going."

Back in 2019, Tate took his digital platform to paper, releasing his book The Flyer Vault: 150 Years of Toronto Concert History through Dundurn Press alongside co-author, Grammy Award-winning musicologist Rob Bowman.
