Donald Glover's 'Atlanta' Won't Be Back Until 2021

But Season 3 and 4 will (hopefully) both arrive the same year

If you were hoping to dive back into Donald Glover's Atlanta this year, you're out of luck. Today the head over at FX revealed the show will not be coming back until 2021. But as a bit of a silver lining, that year will see two instalments of the show arrive — or at least that's the plan.

Today John Landgraf, chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions, was speaking at the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, CA, where he revealed that the return of Atlanta is still a ways off. But he explained that the series plans to film Season 3 and Season 4 at the same time, with Glover apparently asking to air more episodes than originally planned.

Coming as "Part 1 and 2," Landgraf said the first 10 episodes — which would make up Season 3 or Part 1 — should return in January 2021, with the next batch of eight episodes making up Season 4 or Part 2 to follow in the fall of 2021.

"Initially, his [Glover's] intent was to make 16 episodes that would be broken up into eight and eight," Landgraf said. "He came back to us recently because things went so well in the writers room and asked if we would support 10 episodes. We said yes. So the first of those two seasons will be 10."

The 18 episodes will be shot in sequence, with some of filming of course taking place in the show's titular city. However, Landgraf also said Atlanta plans on shooting outside the U.S. as well.

"They're going to shoot them all in sequence. A good chunk of it shoots outside the United States, which is fascinating," Landgraf said. "As long as Donald wants to make more Atlanta, I'm down for that. But it's his choice."

Atlanta aired Season 2 back in 2018, meaning 2021 is a long time to wait for new episodes. But by the sounds of things, it may be worth the wait.
