DJ Egadz

The Cardboard Box

BY Andy LeePublished Nov 1, 2003

On his sophomore release, DJ Egadz remains faithful to his two loves: cinematic landscapes inspired by Portishead and runaway break beats informed by DJ Shadow. The tinkling piano and shuffling drum intro of opener "False Triumph” pave the way for the rest of The Cardboard Box. Occasional vocal samples ("The Splitting Cell”), drum & bass interludes ("Falling Down”), and droning Middle Eastern refrains ("Half Step”) add some much needed kick to the melancholy proceedings. Eventually, however, the disc’s 12 tracks tend to bleed together, giving more weight than perhaps desired to the ironic label, Monotonous Music.
