Though Britt Daniel maintains that his current band Divine Fits is "the real deal," that doesn't mean he's resting on his laurels otherwise. In a recent interview with Exclaim!, the musician revealed that he's about to start work with a third group, even though he's already thinking about the Spoon record, as well.
"I'm going to be recording with this band -- I'm going to be playing bass with Jason Narducy, who's played with Telekinesis and Verbow, and then Jon Wurster [of Superchunk/Mountain Goats] is going to be on drums," Daniel explains. "We're going to be making a record and we're going to have to be there every morning at 11 a.m. We're calling it Split the Evil at this point, but I don't know if that's what [Narducy's] going to end up calling the project."
UPDATE: Consequence of Sound got in touch with Narducy, who informed them that the band name has changed to Spl:t S:ngle, adding, "Britt (bass) and Jon (drums) were kind enough to record 13 songs with me last month." Also, Wurster has tweeted the above photo of the new band.
Unlike in Divine Fits -- which also features Handsome Furs/Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and New Bomb Turks' Sam Brown -- and the long-running Spoon, Daniel will not be writing any of the songs for his third band. "It's basically Jason's songs, Jason singing," he says. "We're backing him up."
In the meantime, Daniel is plenty busy with Divine Fits, who are gearing for their debut full-length A Thing Called Divine Fits and some tour dates, but Spoon is still on his mind. Though the band "don't have any definite plans right now," he admits, "I do have some Spoon songs that are in the works."
He's asked the other members of Spoon, Jim Eno, Rob Pope and Eric Harvey, "to come up with some stuff for me to sing on top of. I just sort of suggested it -- I don't know if they'll do it. I've also come up with a few things. But I'll finish up with this, and we'll get back together again."
A Thing Called Divine Fits drops August 28 through Merge/Universal Music Canada. Divine Fits make their Canadian debut tonight (August 3) in Montreal, and you can see all their tour dates below.
