Published Aug 28, 2013Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner has announced his next solo album, a "post-rock rock opera" called Don't Tell the Driver.
Due November 19 via Drag City, the record is Turner's first solo set since 2003's Moth, and a press release explains that it was "spurred by life experiences and aided by the meditation that only time brings." Turner worked on the LP over the last four years at Melbourne's Big Moth studio, weaving "aquatic guitar-and-drums chemistry" around other assorted sonic touches (melodica, piano and Fender Rhodes).
It's unclear if the narrative is connected throughout the concept LP, but Turner brought in Caroline Kennedy-McCraken (Dead Star, the Plums, Caroline No) and opera singer Oliver Mann to sing on the set. Additionally, bassist Peggy Frew leant a hand to the recordings, while Ian Wadley (Bird Blobs, Minimum Chips), Jeff Wegener (Laughing Clowns) and Kishore Ryan (Kid Sam, Where Were You At Lunch) played drums throughout the LP.
Sound samples have yet to arrive from Don't Tell the Driver, but North American crowds will likely get to check out the songs just ahead of time during Turner's fall tour.
