The heat emanating from Toronto's Dirty Frigs seemed to raise the temperature in the venue a good ten degrees when they began playing. It was a nasty Louisiana heat they brought with their twisted, swampy garage rock. Singer Bri Salmena had a commanding, possessed presence to match her impressive set of lungs, which matched the detuned guitar riffs nicely. Something tells me that the band didn't even know what to expect from her, as she went from soft falsetto to guttural barking in the blink of an eye. Their decision to play mostly slow, sultry numbers was a bold one in such a hot and bothered setting, but they pulled it off. Extra brownie points to Salmena for her barbed comment directed towards the fest's "radius clause," admitting this was their first show in 45 days.
