D*I*R*T*Y

Dirty Space Disco

BY Dimitri NasrallahPublished Jul 18, 2007

As if the French electronic circuit didn’t have enough already going for it at the moment along comes the D*I*R*T*Y crew, a group of DJs-not-DJs who follow in the tradition of crate-digging musical eclecticism sponsored by the likes of Optimo. Like Optimo, they host a club night (in this case, a monthly at Le Paris Paris) that serves as the foundation for this spectacular collection of obscure proto-space disco from the ’70s and ’80s. Like the recent two-disc Cosmo Galactic Prism set by Prins Thomas, Dirty Space Disco is interested in scavenging the roots of spacey disco from a time before the genre had solidified into a movement, and so they include Kosmiche tracks by Cluster’s Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler, as well as space-centric disco soul from the likes of Undisputed Truth, Fern Kinney and Sylvester. As this is being released by Tigersushi, the label behind some of the best-curated comps of the last few years, you can be sure the quality and obscurity here is gemlike.
