Crossfire Hurricane director Brett Morgen was previously confirmed to be in talks with Courtney Love regarding a documentary about Kurt Cobain, and now the filmmaker has shed some light on the upcoming movie, which is tentatively slated for a 2014 release.
Morgen told NME that the film won't be a typical documentary, nor will it dwell on the negative aspects of the Nirvana star's famously tortured personality.
He said, "If you think about Kurt, he's a contradiction. He could be sincere and sentimental, and also ironic and sarcastic. He was sweet and sour. He was incredibly funny too, and the film has to reflect his sprit."
Morgen continued, "The thing about him people might not know too is that he was an incredible visual artist and left behind a treasure chest of comic books, paintings, Super-8 films, all sorts. We're hoping the Cobain film, that'll hopefully be released in 2014, will be this generation's The Wall — a mix of animation and live action that'll allow the audience to experience Kurt in a way they never have before. It's very ambitious."
If you've read Cobain's Journals then you may have some idea of the grunge icon's funny approach to visual art. Of course, his music is filled with humour and irony, so it will be interesting to see how this translates in film.
The director and Love have been plotting the movie since 2007. Morgen previously told the New York Post, "We are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography — [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life."
This year marks the 20th anniversary of In Utero, and there have been hints that the classic 1993 album may see some sort of reissue.
